Hey folks. 🙂 I remember some of the fun we used to have with AGoT puzzles back in the cardgamedb days, so I thought I would give it a shot and see if we could get something similar going here. I'll start things off with a puzzle that was originally posted in the Ours is the Fury Facebook group, which means it was designed with a Baratheon solution in mind (it would actually be trivially easy without that restriction). The original had a slight problem that meant it didn't quite work as intended, but this revised version should hopefully be bulletproof and only have one possible solution. Give it a go if you haven't seen it before. 🙂
Have you ever had to sit and watch as your opponent got to 15 power in marshalling? Well, this your chance for revenge. 🙂
You are playing against Tyrell Alliance - Banners of the Wolf and Watch. Your opponent is first player and their revealed plot is Vanquish the Unbelievers. It is the marshalling phase and your opponent has just marshalled Lysa Arryn and Gates of the Moon, and brought Old Bill Bone out of shadows to kneel your faction card. That leaves them with no gold and no cards in hand. They have the following cards in play:
Gates of the Moon
The Iron Throne (LMHR) - still standing
Host of the Riverlands - with 3 gold on it
Mace Tyrell (HoT) - not triggered yet this phase
Old Bill Bone
Blessed by the Maiden - attached to Mace
Crown of Golden Roses - attached to Rickon
The cards Coldhands removed in a previous round are Riverrun Minstrel and House Florent Knight. One of them was under your control thanks to Mathis Rowan when Coldhands triggered, but they will both enter play under your opponent's control if Coldhands ever leaves play. To make matters worse, your opponent is on 14 power (all on their faction card) and you are on 0. If you do nothing, your opponent will win when their plot triggers at the beginning of challenges, either with Benjen, Mace, or Riverrun Minstrel. They could win even sooner if you do something to enable it. Your opponent is then kind enough to trigger Mathis Rowan and give you control of Tycho Nestoris as well (before you collect income). They think their victory is pretty much a certainty, but in reality they've just given you the last piece of the puzzle for you to be able to win in marshalling, without any way for your opponent to stop you.
Your board is pretty sad by comparison, but you do have virtually unlimited resources. You have The Iron Bank with 72 gold on it after you trigger it, and you also have a Stormlands Fiefdom in play. You have 11 cards in hand and 5 cards in shadows. There are no tokens on the cards in shadows, and there is nothing useful in either player's dead, discard, or used plot pile. Your faction is Baratheon and you are not allowed to use any cards from other factions in your solution (neutral is okay). Your agenda and your revealed plot can be anything you like, but you are not allowed to be in violation of the Conclave restricted list, and you cannot use cards from The Things We Do for Love. Sounds easy? Well, here comes the tricky part... Your deck cannot include more than 1 copy of any card (by title)!
What are the 11 cards in your hand and the 5 cards you have in shadows, and how do you plan on using them to win in the marshalling phase?
Extra credit if you can win without using all of the available cards, or if you end up with any leftover gold on The Iron Bank. 🙂
