Qyburn’s Laboratory #3: Knights of the Casino

This edition of Qyburn’s Laboratory is offered in sacrifice to the RNG gods. For those of you who have either A) never heard the term “RNG” or B) have heard it and not found out, RNG is an acronym for Random Number Generator. In card games, RNG is applied by assigning each individual card a certain, unique, numerical value and then running simulations to calculate the likelihood of drawing that card — or, for this deck’s purpose, having that card appear at the top of an opponent’s deck. Though there are a ton of esoteric concepts in the realm of probability and true randomization vs. pseudo-randomization, we’ll just say that our deck is all about the roulette wheel.

I’d been testing several decks and systematically eliminating them from contention as my deck of choice for the upcoming Regional Championship in the great commonwealth of Kentucky and finally settled on one, which was great. I felt like I knew the deck inside and out; I couldn’t find anyone from my normal OCTGN testing group to play with; and I had a couple free hours to kill on OCTGN late at night…naturally I just wanted to play something fun, but not just fun — Martell and Stark are fun to play — something also jank as shit.

So I asked Patrick (patrickhaynes) what he thought about a deck based on the roulette wheel. He then blew my mind with yet more jank…Why not base a deck on Small Council Chamber, Knights, and big Lanni dudes? Considering my idea was all about using Gregor, Tickler, “Bear and the Maiden Fair,” and Heads on Spikes, I was already playing Banner of the Rose, which also has a lot of great Knight options…So I thought to myself:


For all you grammar nerds out there, I fully realize that it should read ¿Por qué no los dos?, but the internet wasn’t as scrupulous in its meme generation.

At any rate, the basic idea is to use the random effects of Gregor and Tickler and stack the deck with “The Bear and the Maiden Fair.” Obviously, this idea was floating around some time ago when Gregor was first introduced, but I don’t think anyone has revisited the deck to add some serious power gain.

Notable Inclusions:

core_034_little-birdApart from the cards I mentioned above, I did include some beatsticks that serve as targets for Knighted and Little Bird, like KoF and Randyll. LSR really makes the deck fly when Gregor is a walking PTTS and (hopefully) removing opponents’ best characters from the board after flipping other hapless plebs into the dead pile. Also Confiscation solely because we can’t afford Gregor to get Imprisoned or Milked.

Little Bird is key for multiple Gregor shenanigans, plus it powers up Casterly and Small Council Chamber.

Seal of the Hand…come on, we’re trying to flip as many cards as possible into the dead pile.

Originally had Calling the Banners for more economy, but a second Heads on Spikes is just way more banter. Forgotten Plans just couldn’t make the cut, and apart from the 2-drop Knight characters, we’re doing fine with FSoW.


House Florent Knight — right icons, not a terrible cost point for a Lannister deck…unfortunately just gets to be a bit of a liability if things have gone horribly wrong and he has to discard himself or only has 1-drop targets on turn 3, if it makes it that far. Rattleshirt’s Raiders — space and theme. Roseroad Patrol — if only it had the Knight trait. The Hound — space and theme.

Mare in Heat — apart from KoF and Gregor, we’re hardly attacking alone, unless it’s for a hilarious Arbor Knight intrigue challenge, which, even for a jank deck, is pretty niche. Milk of the Poppy — a meta card. This deck is not a competitive deck.


Gift of Arbor Red — was in the deck forever until I just couldn’t squeeze in anything else.

Superior Claim — decent amount of power icons. Could still consider 1x for 62.

Well, that’s about it. Basically just throw a bunch of bodies on the board, gain power, and go to work. Most of the time, I’ll admit, this deck is probably just not that good. However, the times that it does go off, you’re causing table flips guaranteed.
